MusiCares® asks a simple yet urgent question every year: what does it take to sustain a life in music today? Since 2020, the Wellness in Music Survey has served as a critical, year-over-year temperature check on the health, financial stability and overall well-being of music professionals across the United States. Grounded in the experiences of those living it, the insights gathered don’t just highlight challenges, they directly shape how MusiCares shows up for the community.
And that impact is real.
To date, MusiCares has provided more than $135 million in assistance to music professionals. Last year alone, the organization distributed over $17 million in support, spanning both its year-round services and disaster relief efforts. This support included mental health care, addiction recovery services, emergency financial assistance, plus resources for touring professionals and those working behind the scenes. It also provided critical relief for music people impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires and broader economic instability, helping cover immediate needs, rebuild stability and access essential care during times of crisis.
In 2025, a record of nearly 3,200 music professionals participated, offering a clearer picture of the pressures facing the industry. The findings reinforced what many already feel: financial instability, inconsistent access to health care, and the demands of touring continue to shape daily life for music people. The data also pointed to ongoing mental health challenges across the community, underscoring the need for continued, industry-specific support.
This is why participation matters.
The Wellness in Music Survey ensures that support is not built on assumptions, but on real lived experiences. It helps identify emerging needs, track progress over time and guide where resources go next.
The 2026 survey is now open from April 6–17.
