Scenery Bags Celebrates Earth Month By Proving Sustainability And Storytelling Can Share The Same Stage

Scenery Bags highlights its Earth Month initiative focused on sustainable design and eco-conscious travel accessories, combining environmental responsibility with a storytelling-driven brand approach.

(New York, NY) Tuesday, March 17th, 2026 – Scenery Bags, the eco-conscience accessories brand transforming discarded Broadway materials into coveted, limited-edition fashion and home pieces, is celebrating Earth Month by spotlighting a powerful truth: some of the most beautiful art in the world is thrown away.

Each year, thousands of pounds of theatrical backdrops, scrims, and stage materials from Broadway and regional productions are discarded once a show closes. For Jennifer Kahn, Founder & CEO of Scenery Bags, witnessing that waste firsthand sparked a mission.

As a then stage manager on Broadway, Jennifer knew the amount of time and effort invested in creating scenic elements for theatrical productions. Her goal for Scenery Bags was to work as an act of preservation not only to save artistic legacy by upcycling materials, and saving the art we love, but also by helping to protect our planet.

Jennifer explains “Earth Month is special because it recenters peoples focus on what we can do for our environment. The lovely thing about Scenery Bags is that every month is Earth Month. Not only do we get to decrease the theatrical waste footprint, we also work hard to surround that upcycled material with linings that are eco friendly as well.”

The materials utilized by Scenery Bags undergo a meticulous process of cleaning and repurposing, ensuring that they are transformed into high-quality accessories handcrafted in America. This practice not only reduces waste but also supports domestic craftsmanship, reflecting a commitment to ethical production standards. The diverse range of products includes items made from iconic theatrical materials, such as pouches from WICKED, The Lion King, Suffs, Cabaret, Kinky Boots and many more, as well as unique jewelry crafted from the stage of Beetlejuice, Jagged Little Pill and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Customers don’t just purchase a product — they own a singular, irreplaceable fragment of performance history.

Scenery Bags ensures that every bag does more than reduce landfill waste, it helps keep theatre accessible for future generations. The company donates 10% of all proceeds to Theatre Development Fund (TDF) facilitating opportunities for students to attend Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including TDF’s Accessibility for Students Program which is a program that provides access to Broadway and Off-Broadway performances for elementary and secondary school students who are blind or low vision and/or deaf or hard of hearing.  The company also engages in special product collaborations, with portions of proceeds benefiting organizations such as the Cody Renard Scholarship, Broadway Green Alliance, and Stonewall Community Foundation. This multi-faceted approach underscores Scenery Bags dedication not only to the environment but also to fostering inclusivity within the arts.

The brand sits at the intersection of climate consciousness, American manufacturing, and cultural preservation. In an industry not traditionally associated with sustainability, Scenery Bags is proving that circular design can be both luxurious and meaningful.

For those who love our planet, and the magic of live theatre, Earth Month is a reminder that beautiful art doesn’t belong in a landfill. It belongs in your hands.
