Black Chariot returns in a new 4K restoration, bringing Robert Goodwin’s groundbreaking independent film back to audiences for the first time in decades. Starring screen legend Bernie Casey in his first leading role alongside Barbara O. Jones, the 1971 film follows a drifter whose journey unfolds against the backdrop of social awakening and the Black Power movement through a striking blend of 35mm film and video.
Premiering at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1971, Black Chariot remained largely unseen for decades before this new restoration. The 4K restoration was completed by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture with funding from the National Film Preservation Foundation and additional support from the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts.
