(New York, N.Y., November 13, 2023)—The award-winning short documentary “Puffling” is now streaming worldwide on The New Yorker’s digital channels. Watch the full film now here.

“Puffling” is currently having its New York film festival première as part of DOC NYC’s Short List program, which features films that are considered to be among the years’ strongest contenders for awards season. The film’s director Jessica Bishop is in New York and available for interview.

This intimate and meditative film follows teenagers Birta and Selma, on a remote Icelandic island, as they take it upon themselves to counteract humanity’s damaging impact on nature and save pufflings (young puffins) from imminent danger; exchanging night-time parties for nocturnal puffin rescues. A coming-of-age documentary about growing up and making choices, Puffling explores the delicate interplay between wildlife, the environment, and human life.

“By paralleling the uncertain, often precarious experiences of both the teenagers and puffins, the film seeks to demonstrate the direct connections between humanity and the natural world,” Jessica Bishopp, the film’s director, said. “By exploring how younger generations are taking an active role in global issues, ‘Puffling’ offers an alternative perspective on climate change. I wanted to tell a creative and joyful story from the personal perspective of teenagers on the climate change frontline.”
