Los Angeles, California – (December 16th, 2023) Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Present “HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS” Day 3 featured and sold over 250 items in this “white glove” sale including 400 original hand-drawn storyboards, screen-used wardrobe items, commemorative bowling pins signed by Jeff Bridges and more, in their 25th anniversary celebration of one of the most beloved and coolest comedy film classics of all time, The Big Lebowski. A portion of the proceeds from each lot will go towards Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign – making a difference while celebrating The Dude, Walter and the whole gang. Day 3 of the four-day auction blockbuster took place Saturday, December 16th live at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, but the spirit of The Dude was global with bidders around the world participating online at Julien’s Live, scoring some righteous memorabilia.

At the center of this auction was the work of J.Todd Anderson, who has created the storyboards for all of the Coen Brothers’ films since Raising Arizona in 1987.  This sale represents the first auction of his storyboard artwork, which included all of the pages from the film except one that he saved for himself, 400 in all.

Today’s auction headliner was the iconic “Jeffrey” The Dude ensemble worn by the film’s star Jeff Bridges that sold for $169,00 (5X Estimate). The light brown knitted fleece bathrobe and an off-white cotton Jockey T-shirt worn by Bridges appears in the opening scene of the film, when The Dude walks through a Ralph’s grocery store and drinks from a carton of milk when the Stranger introduces the now iconic character to the audience. The ensemble is also seen when the Dude approaches and enters his home and is attacked by Jackie Treehorn’s enforcers as well as other scenes when the Dude pours himself a Caucasian.

Another key Dude accessory from the film are the sunglasses worn by Jeff Bridges throughout the film which sold for $88,900 (4X Estimate). This pair of sunglasses featuring nylon frames with material flaking as well as amber-colored polycarbonate lenses was notably seen in the opening scene of the film, when The Dude walks through a Ralph’s grocery store and the diner scene with Walter Sobchak.

A top highlight was the sale of the entire “The Big Lebowski: “The Official Storyboards” (estimate: $500-700 each) created by J. Todd Anderson. Anderson’s original cover art sketch depicting the film’s characters, Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, Walter Sobchak, Theodore Donald “Donny” Kerabatsos and Maude Lebowski in a bowling alley and “The Big Lebowski” played by David Huddleston on the ground, fallen from his wheelchair sold for $13,000 (26X Estimate).

Anderson’s original storyboard sketch for Scene 76, Set-Up 6 “Scattering Donny’s Ashes Scene” that includes a sticky note with a handwritten note that reads “My Opinion: Funniest Gag In Cinema History A” and a paste-up stating “6. 2-shot from in front after speech” sold for $19,500 (39X Estimate).

Other highlights included:

  • Jeff Bridges’ signed bowling pin (C) with an illustration doodled of his character The Dude with Maude (Julianne Moore) pregnant with his child, along with the inscription “You’re what” sold for $7,620, an incredible 25X the original estimate.
  • Jeff Bridges’ signed bowling pin (D) with an illustration of Bridges as The Dude bowling, with the inscription “Take er’ easy” sold for $7,620, also 25X the original estimate.
  • Jeff Bridges’ signed Hollywood Star Lanes bowling ball return from the set of the production sold for $16,250, 16X the estimate.
  • Lot 479, the “Grocery Store Scene” storyboard of The Dude smelling the milk sold for $3,492 (7X Estimate).
  • Lot 482, the “Grocery Store End Scene” storyboards set of three sold for $8,890 (17X Estimate).
  • Lot 488, the “Home Invasion Scene” storyboard of The Dude getting dragged through his house sold for $4,550 (9X Estimate).
  • Lot 492, the “Home Invasion Scene” storyboard of The Dude laying next to his toilet sold for $4,445 (9X Estimate).
  • Lot 500, the “Bowling Scene” storyboard introducing the trio of The Dude, Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi) sold for $10,400 (20X Estimate).
  • Lot 540, the “Jesus Quintana Scene” storyboard depicting John Turturro licking his bowling ball, sold for $4,550 (9X Estimate).

  • Lot 603, the “Tow Yard Scene” storyboard featuring The Dude picking up his car from impound across four storyboard pages, sold for $6,500 (13X Estimate).
  • Lot 641, the “Jackie Treehorn Scene” storyboard with The Dude getting dizzy across six pages of art, sold for $7,800 (15X Estimate).
