Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, and Southern University Join “MICHAEL CELEBRATES: Legacy, Artistry, Culture”
Santa Monica, February 26, 2026 – In anticipation of the global release of Michael, to be released domestically by Lionsgate on April 24, and in celebration of Black History Month, three historically Black colleges and universities with strong traditions of marching band excellence perform and honor the music of Michael Jackson.
HBCU communities have always led the way in celebrating Black excellence in all walks of life, and in particular, the music, legacy, and cultural influence of Michael Jackson. Renowned for their interpretation, arrangement, and performance skill, these bands showcase their powerful performances rooted in culture, tradition, and pride in every performance. Now, “MICHAEL CELEBRATES: Legacy, Artistry, Culture,” honors the shared, enduring relationship between the HBCU community and Michael’s life and music and recognizes the communities that move his legacy forward.
Over three days of social posts highlighting special performances, Florida A&M University’s The Marching 100, Jackson State University’s The Sonic Boom of the South, and Southern University’s The Human Jukebox have each showcased their band’s own, distinct interpretation of Jackson’s classic hit, “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough”— each posting on social media in collaboration with the film’s social media platforms. All three schools’ performances are now live on the film’s socials across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook.
Now, communities around the world are invited to join the celebration with their own performances of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” by posting videos on social media using the hashtags #MichaelLegacy and #MichaelMovie.
“For Michael’s fans everywhere, his legacy of performance and artistry is enduring. That legacy lives powerfully within HBCU communities, where music, movement, and excellence have long been expressions of culture, pride, and identity,” said Briana McElroy, head of digital marketing for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “This initiative is deeply personal to me — I grew up listening to these bands, who represent Black excellence, community, and creativity. Partnering with these HBCUs is about honoring that legacy while creating space for the next generation to lead, perform, and inspire.”
Michael will be distributed by Universal in international markets outside of Japan, where it will be distributed by Kino Films in association with Lionsgate.
