Make It to Munich: smash hit Scottish feel good doc lands Hollywood Premiere!

The uplifting story of Scots teenager Ethan Walker, the pioneering surgeon Professor Gordon Mackay who aided his incredible recovery and their epic 800-mile cycle from Hampden to Munich for the kick off Euro 24 will premiere at The Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles on September 7th .

Ethan, Gordon, Stephen and the film’s director Martyn Robertson will appear on the red carpet at the famous Hollywood cinema as part of The Silicon Beach Film Festival.

Hot from closing Glasgow Film Festival 2025 (where it sold out all three festival cinema screens in less than 24 hours) and shot in the run-up to Euro 2024, the rousing Scottish documentary Make It to Munich will hit America following its general release in UK independent cinemas.

The film follows Ethan Walker, a promising teenage footballer from Aberdeenshire who, just months into a football scholarship at a USA University, suffers life-threatening injuries (including multiple fractures, two brain hemorrhages and the complete dislocation of his right knee) in a road traffic accident. Aided in his recovery by pioneering Stirlingshire surgeon (and former Rangers footballer who was signed by Graeme Souness and worked with Ally McCoist) Professor Gordon Mackay, Ethan decides to cycle from Hampden to Munich for Scotland’s opening match against Germany in Euro 2024 -just nine months after his accident. What’s more, Ethan is entrusted by Andy Robertson, the Scotland National team captain, to carry the match pennant on his back for the whole journey and deliver it in time for kick off.

Ethan is accompanied in this quest by Gordon, Tartan Army foot-soldier Stephen Collie and the film’s director Martyn Robertson (whose previous hit documentary Ride the Wave followed teenage Scottish surfing prodigy Ben Larg).

Make It to Munich is an uplifting story of human willpower, scientific ingenuity, male friendship and the questionable wisdom of making a film with one hand while the other one grasps the handlebars for a 800-mile cycle.

Now audiences in Los Angeles will get the chance to see Ethan, Gordon, Stephen and Martyn and their support driver Rick in person as they appear at the screening event.

Director and Producer – Martyn Robertson said, ‘Make it to Munich is a triumph against the odds story – a celebration of Scottish spirit and follows the journey of an inspirational young person. I’m delighted to be travelling with the film to Hollywood can’t wait to see how it plays for a US audience. We’ll be in Hollywood wearing our kilts and on bikes for the big day.
